How Many Boxes of Tiles Do I Need? Calculating Square Meters & Waste Allowance (10% vs 15%)

Learn how to calculate exactly how many square meters and boxes of floor or wall tiles you need to order and why adding a 10%–15% waste allowance is essential.

1. Practical formula for measuring floors and walls

For rectangular floors, multiply the length by the width of each room (e.g., a 6 m × 4.5 m living room = 27 m² net). For bathroom or kitchen walls, add the perimeter of the walls to be tiled and multiply by the ceiling height.

2. When to add 10% vs. 15% waste allowance for cuts?

For standard straight or offset installations, we recommend adding a +10% margin to cover perimeter cuts and keep 1–2 spare tiles from the exact same production batch/shade. For diagonal (45°) or herringbone layouts, select +15% in our automatic box calculator.
